Nordic Ministers! Listen to Engineers and Prioritize Lifelong Learning

ANE and NORDTEK (the Network of Technical Universities in the Nordic and Baltic countries) stand united in urging Nordic ministers to prioritize lifelong learning opportunities for STEM professionals across the Nordic Region.

It’s undeniable that the existing workforce already plays a vital role in driving green innovation. However, the demand for environmentally conscious solutions is outpacing the education pipeline, leaving a void between the skills required and those available. To bridge this gap, we must harness the power of lifelong learning.

ANE and NORDTEK (the Network of Technical Universities in the Nordic and Baltic countries) stand united in urging Nordic ministers to prioritize lifelong learning opportunities for STEM professionals across the Nordic Region.

Every field, from traditional engineering to emerging digital disciplines, must adapt and evolve to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. This necessitates a united Nordic approach to identifying the precise skills needed for an effective transition towards sustainable practices. At the heart of this vision lies the pivotal role of Nordic ministers to secure a fundamental shift in the way current funding in higher education is prioritised.

It is with conviction that we encourage ministers to motivate Higher Education Institutions to:

Facilitate the expansion of versatile lifelong learning options, catering to professionals seeking skills at their own pace and in a manner that suits their working lives.

Democratize education by enabling all qualified learners to access courses that were once exclusive to full-time degree students.

Champion the development of digitally disseminated micro-credentials – an approach characterized by modular learning, allowing individuals to swiftly and effectively acquire targeted skills.

The need for innovation also extends to the structure of education itself. We propose the establishment of a Nordic-wide portal dedicated to flexible lifelong learning. By consolidating information and application processes, this platform would simplify access to courses, fostering an environment of learning and collaboration.

Furthermore, as the dominion of climate technology stakes its claim, transcending boundaries becomes the order of the day. Sharing insights, expertise, and wisdom across geographical, organizational, and sectoral lines becomes paramount. It is in evading insular mentalities that ministers across the Nordics work hard to unlock the true potential of our collective competencies and knowledge base.
