Europe Day in a year of elections

Europe Day is a celebration of peace and unity. In an election year, it takes on even greater significance as a reminder that every vote counts in shaping the future of Europe. In this spirit, we hosted election debates across the Nordic capitals to help our community make informed decisions.

Europe Day signifies the dawn of European integration, a journey towards peace, unity and economic security. With the European Elections (6-9 June) on the horizon, this year’s Europe Day also presents an opportunity to envision the future we desire for the Union.

We acknowledge that the EU’s political landscape may change post-election, influencing decision-making processes across Europe. These changes hinge on the election outcomes and the alliances subsequently formed within the European Parliament. Hence, we view Europe Day 2024 as a timely reminder for everyone to exercise their right to vote.

Election Debates Across Nordic Capitals

Our commitment to informed voting was the driving force behind our decision to host election debates in partnership with NFU and Nordiska Handelskommittén. We wanted to understand the political stances of the candidates, especially concerning our policy agenda:

Championing Environmental Sustainability: We delved into the candidates’ strategies for promoting renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions, and safeguarding our natural resources. Specifically, we were interested in hearing their approaches towards an observed diminishing EU ambition on paying for renewable technologies for the future due to tightening budgets.

Driving Competitiveness: Recognizing engineers and STEM professionals as key innovators, we explored the candidates’ plans to address the current skill gap and brain drain in Europe. Their strategies to ensure Europe’s competitiveness, and strategic autonomy and secure qualified labour in both short and long-term horizons were of particular interest.

Leveraging Responsible Tech: We acknowledged the crucial role of engineers in creating and applying responsible tech and sought the candidates’ views on the ethical use of AI. We were keen to understand their plans for striking a balance between enhancing security (cybersecurity including) and safeguarding human rights, data protection and privacy.

Our three “meet and greet” events with the candidates running for the European Parliament, took place in Helsinki, Copenhagen, and Stockholm, throughout April. The debates were lively, and the spirit of mutual respect was awesome. If this spirit echoes in the future parliament, we are optimistic about the next European Parliament’s ability to work together, think of joint solutions, and tackle the challenges that Europe faces.

The EU election is a big deal for all Europeans, and engineers and STEM professionals in the Nordics are no exception. Remember, every vote counts!
